Cookie Clicker turns 10 today! Having outlived our enemies, let us celebrate with a fresh batch of announcements!

🍪First of all, Cookie Clicker is 40% off on Steam this week! The perfect gift for your loved and/or hated ones! (the web version is still free forever but you don't get Steam achievements or music by C418!)

🍪Secondly! The mobile version has been lagging behind the browser game for years and is in dire need of an update. I've been dedicating most of my time recently to bringing its content up to par! Here's a progress report:

Compared to the current version, this update adds back 284 upgrades and 179 achievements from the web game, which leaves 83 upgrades and 94 achievements still unimplemented plus a good amount of heavenly upgrades. I am determined to close that gap!

Seasons and the pet dragon are currently partially implemented. These are complicated, compound features with side-effects in all kinds of places so once the update gets an alpha release I'll likely be needing everyone's help to hunt for bugs and oversights. I'm being as thorough as possible but there's no way I didn't forget some obscure interplay somewhere!

I'm also updating the UI! Cookie Clicker's interface makes heavy use of woodwork, which is largely absent from the mobile version; I've been aiming to bring it back. Rather than recycling desktop assets, I'm looking to push the game's visual identity towards less "plain wooden boards" and more "victorian biscuit shop" (something I'd have liked to go for when I first made the game but didn't quite know how yet). Here's some early screenshots!

I'm using Blender for the new assets, I might make a more in-depth post about my process in the future. Please note that these are experimental and I'm still fiddling with the look! Once I'm happy with it I'll ideally be giving the desktop game a similar makeover.

This update will hopefully come out later this year and will likely involve multiple rounds of alpha. Once stable, future updates will focus on adding sugar lumps and as many of the minigames as possible.

Mac’s schedule, updated:

Because Mac’s shown me he really doesn’t like going to pee too soon after his last walk, I’m adding a few hours in and seeing how he does going out at 7:00, 1:00, and 7:00. So far, he seems more comfortable with that. So we’re gonna try that, but with longer walks at each time, (just fewer of them.)

Also, today I left him with the playpen door open, with his Greenie, and went out from 8:30 to about 10:15. He barked and cried VERY LOUDLY when I left, so much that I was worried, but I think he was feeding off my anxiety. I left, and prayed all the way to and from the store that he wouldn’t cry the whole time and get me in trouble with the landlord.

When I got home, with my purchases and his bag of food, everything was quiet. When I got to the door, I heard little feet on the floor, and his nose sniffing, and some very soft whines. Looking around the apartment shows he slept on his blanket (it’s rumpled), and rolled on the floor (the rug is crinkled.) No pee indoors. No poop indoors. His Greenie was untouched but once I came in, he ran over and ate it up.

Mac’s a great dog. I gave him a bath yesterday and it was a breeze – he’s great in the tub. He put up with my late-night panic attack and my decision to step up.

Mac needs me to be his alpha. Of course he does! But knowing that and doing it are different things.

I remember being a kid and wishing for rigid rules. I had an anxiety disorder all my life and didn’t know why I felt fear all the time – I just wanted rules to help guide me. When I put myself in Mac’s paws, I see he is looking to me for the same rules. He feels lost because I wasn’t showing him how he was expected to behave, so he was uncertain. Given that, he was still incredibly well-behaved. But structure doesn’t mean unkindness – just the opposite. I got a good night sleep for the first time since I got him, and started on the new schedule today.

He’s been great. I gave him his new harness and lead – he’s been great. I fed him from his new bowls – great. We did clicker training and I’ve been practicing his commands with him from his old life – he knows sit and lie down and I don’t know what else yet. We’re learning together and it’s awesome.

My confidence builds, and his builds. I’m calm, and he’s calm. When I came home from my trip, I had arrhythmia I was so panicked, so I waited outside the building and deep breathed until I was calmer. Then I said, channel somebody cool and collected. So I channeled the Fonz. I said ‘how would the Fonz approach this situation?’ Then I calmly and slowly went up to my apartment. And there was no crying, no mess, nothing. Just a happy, non-traumatized little dog.

This is wild – not because I expected less of Mac, who is a doll, but because I had expected less of myself but I managed to control my anxiety for him. That’s unheard of. I can’t believe the self-control I have – first doing a job interview, and now stopping a panic attack, all by thinking of my responsibility to Mac. If anything shows me I was meant to have a dog, it’s that.

I feel like I’ve really turned a corner. I’m finally seeing how to adjust. Mac’s a good sport, and is waiting for me to catch up in the ‘acceptance’ phase. 😊

I owe it primarily to my faith, but also to Mac of course, and his Foster, and his original family, for training such a great dog. I finally feel hopeful again, and it’s great. I know I’m doing okay. And I know Mac will be okay. He’s a smart cookie, and a tough guy. He’ll find his place with me, if I let him. So I’m letting him. He’s my boy, and I finally feel like I deserve to say that, deserve to care for him. He’s helping me step up, and that’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.

Cookie Clicker was initially made for laughs, the whole gameplay loop mostly expanding on the lollipop farm feature in Candy Box:

the game's current presentation and design logic stem from the years i spent as a kid playing old macintosh shareware as well as my interest in skeuomorphic UI. if you browse through Macintosh Garden long enough you're bound to find some of the stuff i obsessed over between 7 and 17 and i'm sure a lot of it has subconsciously found its way into the way i make my games.

some of Cookie Clicker's major features originate from early player suggestions and from reading discussions about the budding idle game genre, ie. the prestige/ascend system was added after i read people discussing a flash game named Kaguya Table (which involves a feature called "mastery"):

i've been asked before where the creepy grandmapocalypse body horror idea comes from and for the most part the answer is i'm just kind of a little freak like that. Cookie Clicker's initial "made-in-4-hours" version ended with the grandma building going bonkers and replacing the whole background. i'd been into Junji Ito and similar things for some time at that point so turning it into a whole thing for the "i'm making this game seriously actually" version felt like a logical step. pretend the Junji Ito image i'm including is from his gorier stuff

finally, the kitten upgrades and possibly the whole "achievements grant milk" thing were added at the insistent request of a tumblr user who really really wanted me to add cats to the game somehow.
